Judge Nesbitt earned his B.A. degree from the University of Florida in 1951. After serving in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, he earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1957. He began practicing law as an Assistant Attorney General of Florida, and later practiced law with his wife, the late Lenore Carrero Nesbitt.
The Nesbitts had the rare distinction of being husband-and-wife judges. Joseph Nesbitt was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami, where he presided in the general jurisdiction and probate divisions. Thereafter, Lenore Nesbitt was appointed Judge of the same court, and later served as United States District Judge for the Southern District of Florida.
Judge Joseph Nesbitt was appointed to the Third District Court of Appeal in 1979. He represented the district courts of appeal on various committees and also served as President of the Florida Conference of District Court of Appeal Judges. Judge Nesbitt retired on December 31, 1999. After retirement, he continued to serve the Court as a senior judge for several years.
Judge Nesbitt was born in Leesburg, Florida on January 16, 1930. The judge and his late wife are survived by two children. Judge Nesbitt resided in Winter Park, Florida when he passed away.
