The Third District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) is seeking nominees for the judicial vacancy resulting from the retirement of Judge Frank A. Shepherd. The JNC seeks and encourages a broad, diverse and qualified pool of applicants. Deadline: November 28, 2016.
Judge Vance E. Salter of the Florida Third District Court of Appeal has been selected by the Dade County Bar Association (DCBA) as the recipient of the Justice Joseph Story Award.
The DCBA “Over the Rainbow” Award ceremony is an annual event and was first held in 2014. The Justice Joseph Story Award was also created in 2014 and Judge Salter will be the third recipient. Prior recipients were Hilarie Bass, Esq. and Stephen F. Rossman, Esq.
Justice Story’s contributions to the Supreme Court continue to affect us today – some 200 years after he was first appointed to the High Court. Justice Story’s penchant for protecting the rights of property owners helped shape early American jurisprudence in a tailored direction to encourage ownership in the celebrated decisions that all of us remember fondly from First Year Property Class, including Martin v. Hunter’s Lessee and The Amistad case. A prolific author, scholar, chaired Professor for Law School, Justice Story fought to ensure that the U.S. Constitution be protected for what he called suiting the purposes of the people, in framing this great character of our liberties, and to provide for minute specifications of its power.
Historians agree that Justice Joseph Story reshaped American law in a conservative direction that protected property rights.
The Third District Court of Appeal congratulates Judge Salter on this prestigious honor.
ABOTA's program with the Third District Court of Appeal
ABOTA strives to educate and inspire students to have knowledge of and respect for the United States Constitution, our system of justice and the value of an independent judiciary. To promote interest in law and civics education, ABOTA provides students and teachers with court visits, presentations, roundtables and workshops, such as the current programs with the Third District Court of Appeal, James Otis Lecture presentation for high school students, and the Teachers Law School for public school teachers. Through these efforts, ABOTA aims to provide teachers and students with a better understanding and appreciation of the Seventh Amendment right to a civil jury trial.
