F.I.U. School of Law, New Students Orientation
On Friday, August 15, 2014, the Third District Court of Appeal hosted the Florida International University School of Law, New Students Orientation. FIU Law welcomed Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Jorge Labarga, who delivered the keynote address and administered the First-Year Student Pledge to the incoming students. The pledge officially inducts students into the law school and holds them accountable to the values of the legal profession: integrity, honesty, fairness, and service to the profession.

On Friday, April 11, 2014, at 3:00 PM the Court hosted the annual Appellate Jurisdiction Seminar, sponsored by the Appellate Court Committee of the Dade County Bar Association.

Investiture of Edwin A. Scales, III
On Friday, March 21, 2014, at 3:00 p.m., the Court held the formal investiture of Judge Edwin Scales, III, at the Third District Court of Appeal, 2001 S. W. 117th Avenue, Miami, Florida. Judge Scales was appointed to the Third District Court of Appeal on October 18, 2013, by Governor Rick Scott to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Angel A. Cortiñas. Judge Scales is the first Monroe County lawyer appointed to the Third District Court of Appeal bench since its creation in 1957.

ABOTA's program with the Third District Court of Appeal
On March 19, 2014, thirty students from John A. Ferguson High School attended the court’s Oral Argument session as part of an educational program sponsored by ABOTA (American Board of Trial Advocates.)

ABOTA strives to educate and inspire students to have knowledge of and respect for the United States Constitution, our system of justice and the value of an independent judiciary.  To promote interest in law and civics education, ABOTA provides students and teachers with court visits, presentations, roundtables and workshops, such as the current programs with the Third District Court of Appeal, James Otis Lecture presentation for high school students, and the Teachers Law School for public school teachers. Through these efforts, ABOTA aims to provide teachers and students with a better understanding and appreciation of the Seventh Amendment right to a civil jury trial.
